The family, friends, and many supporters of Jo Jo Fritz, 50, are mourning her passing after a courageous battle with stage 4 breast cancer.
Jo Jo died peacefully on Wednesday at 12:53 p.m. at her home in Titus, Alabama, surrounded by family. Her husband, Tom Fritz, shared the heartbreaking news as loved ones gathered to say goodbye.
Remembering Jo Jo Fritz
Jo Jo’s death comes only days after she was placed in hospice care, prompting an outpouring of support from people across the community and beyond.
Millions had been following her journey and hoping she would have an opportunity to enjoy more time with her family. Despite her declining health, Jo Jo had remained excited about a special adventure she and Tom had planned for the fall.
The couple had envisioned revamping an old school bus and traveling through Alabama, Florida, and Georgia throughout October as part of the “Where’s Jo Jo? The Pink Bus Journey Of A Lifetime.”
The journey was intended to give them an opportunity to say goodbye to family and friends approximately one year after Jo Jo was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.
Jo Jo’s Final Hours
According to Tom, Jo Jo’s condition deteriorated significantly during the week leading up to her death.
On Wednesday morning, a hospice nurse visited the family and prepared them for the possibility that Jo Jo had less than 24 hours remaining.
The hospice chaplain later visited the home, prayed with the family, and sang “Amazing Grace.”
Tom eventually rested briefly on the couch before his daughter woke him and told him it might be time.
He went into the room where their children and Jo Jo’s siblings were gathered around her. Tom knelt beside his wife, kissed her cheek, and held her hand.
Jo Jo then passed away peacefully.
A Family Surrounded Her With Love
Following Jo Jo’s death, Tom spent the evening surrounded by 29 family members who had gathered at the home.
As the family began coming to terms with the loss, Tom reflected on one of the most difficult realities of his new life without his wife: knowing that he would no longer be able to speak with Jo Jo before going to bed.
His words reflected the deep bond the couple shared and the enormous absence her death has created within the family.
The Pink Bus Journey
The planned Pink Bus journey had become an important part of Jo Jo and Tom’s final chapter together.
Jo Jo had encouraged her husband to continue with the trip even as her health deteriorated. The journey was intended to honor their relationship, visit loved ones, and create meaningful memories.
Following her death, Tom and his family will decide whether he should continue the journey as a tribute to Jo Jo.
For now, however, Tom’s priority is honoring his wife and spending time with family as they make funeral arrangements.
Funeral Arrangements
Tom Fritz and the family are expected to make funeral arrangements over the weekend.
Additional details concerning the service have not yet been announced.
Friends, supporters, and members of the wider community are being encouraged to continue offering their condolences and support to the Fritz family during this painful period.
A Life Remembered
Jo Jo Fritz will be remembered as a loving wife, family member, and friend whose personality and generosity touched many people.
Those who followed her journey will remember her courage during her battle with cancer, as well as the joy and enthusiasm she brought to the people around her.
Her photographs, stories, and memories will now become treasured reminders of a woman whose life inspired many people to come together in support of her and her family.
Jo Jo Fritz will be deeply missed by Tom, her children, siblings, extended family, friends, and the countless people who followed her story and hoped for her recovery.
May Jo Jo rest peacefully, and may her family find strength and comfort in the love, memories, and moments they shared with her.
May the memory of this sweet, funny, and giving woman continue to be a blessing to everyone who knew and loved her.
