The Upper Hutt College community is mourning the passing of Sam Keegan, a much-loved Year 10 Dean and Geography and Social Studies teacher who died following a five-year battle with cancer.
Throughout his illness, Sam continued to dedicate himself to teaching despite undergoing treatments, surgeries, and the many challenges that accompanied his condition. His determination and commitment to his students became an important part of the legacy he leaves behind.

Sam loved teaching and took great pride in sharing his passion for Geography and Social Studies with his students.
As a Year 10 Dean, he played an important role in supporting young people at Upper Hutt College. He encouraged students, challenged them when necessary, and developed meaningful relationships across the school community.
Students and colleagues remembered Sam as positive, energetic, genuine, and good-humoured. His ability to connect with people made him a valued teacher, Dean, and member of the school community.

Sam’s Life Beyond the Classroom
Outside teaching, Sam had many interests that brought him happiness.
He was passionate about travel, CrossFit, gaming, and animals, with his dog Jeffrey holding a particularly special place in his life.
In 2024, Sam represented New Zealand at the Torian Pro Competition in Australia, reflecting his dedication to CrossFit and fitness.
His love of travel also took him to Southeast Asia shortly before his passing. During a visit to Tokyo, he even made an unexpected appearance on Japanese television, adding another memorable experience to a life filled with adventure.
Words That Will Be Remembered
One of Sam’s most meaningful messages came during the 2024 Leavers Dinner, when he shared words that reflected his outlook on life:
“Life is full of wins and lessons – wins are nice, but lessons make you who you are.”
The message has taken on even greater significance following his death.
It reflects the perspective Sam brought to his interactions with students and colleagues and offers a lasting reminder of the values he sought to share with young people.
